لِلْأَدَبِ الْعَرَبِيِّ تَارِيخٌ عَرِيقٌ يَمْتَدُّ لِأَكْثَرَ مِنْ أَلْفٍ وَخَمْسِمِئَةِ سَنَةٍ. بَدَأَ بِالشِّعْرِ الْجَاهِلِيِّ الَّذِي كَانَ يُلْقَى فِي الْأَسْوَاقِ وَالْمَجَالِسِ.
Transliteration

lil-adabi al-ʿarabiyyi tārīkhun ʿarīqun yamtaddu li-akthara min alfin wa khamsimiʾati sanatin. badaʾa bish-shiʿri al-jāhiliyyi alladhī kāna yulqā fī al-aswāqi wa al-majālisi.

English translation

Arabic literature has an ancient history spanning more than fifteen hundred years. It began with pre-Islamic poetry that was recited in markets and gatherings.
